Lack of natural humidity causes the air in our homes to dry out which can be very uncomfortable for those suffering from Sjögren’s Syndrome. Dryness of the mouth, nose, eyes and skin are pervasive in those affected with Sjögren’s who could benefit from added moisture in the home. If the lack of humidity in your home is making your skin, throat or nasal passages dry, it may be time to look in to a cool mist humidifier.
Humidification is simply, the addition of water into air. Most people require a certain amount of ambient moisture in the air in order to be comfortable but Sjögren’s sufferers can benefit greatly from added humidity since dryness is felt throughout the entire body, not just in the eyes and mouth.
Adding cool mist humidity to the house and bedside will help ease dryness symptoms and are especially beneficial for people with Sjögren’s Syndrome. Running a humidifier at night can help with not only nighttime eye dryness but also with mouth and nose dryness. It’s important to note that a cool mist humidifier is the preferred choice for Sjögren’s sufferers as it will provide better conditions for easing these problems. Cool mist is easier for the body to inhale than warm mist.
Cool mist humidifiers come in two types – evaporative humidifiers and ultrasonic humidifiers:
Evaporative – In an evaporative humidifier a fan pulls in warm air from the room and uses it to evaporate water held inside a wick. The air becomes more humid as water naturally evaporates and is carried away.
Ultrasonic – Rather than use a fan, an ultrasonic humidifier uses high-frequency ultrasonic vibrations to evaporate the water which makes them significantly quieter.
Overall, evaporative cool mist humidifiers are safer and more cost-efficient.
Adding humidity to the air can be very beneficial, however, too much humidity can cause health issues. Please keep in mind that high humidity levels can worsen respiratory problems and create an uncomfortable dampness in the air which can encourage the growth of:
- dust mites
- harmful bacteria
It is recommended that a home’s humidity stay between 30 and 50 percent. A hygrometer can determine how much humidity is in your home and are easily found at your local hardware store.
